Who is the Roman patrician tasked with kidnapping Getafix?
Read the complete plot summary of Asterix Conquers America, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Julius Caesar, [Thomas Reiner], furious after another Gaulish victory, hatches a plan to sever the Gauls from their magic potion. He orders his most loyal patrician, Lucullus, [Michael Habeck], to kidnap the druid Getafix, [Michael Habeck], and send him off the edge of the world. Asterix, [Peer Augustinski], and Obelix, [Ottfried Fischer], spot the operation and spring into action as they witness Getafix being seized by the Romans aboard a galley. A freak accident during a skirmish among the Gauls spills a cauldron of potion, setting off a chain of events that will take the Gauls far from their homeland.
The Gauls trail the Roman galley across the sea and reunite with Dogmatix, who had been thrown overboard, before landing on the east coast of North America—mistaking it for the world’s edge. Lucullus is delighted when Asterix, Obelix, and Dogmatix crash ashore and returns home to tell Caesar the good news. The Gauls, curious and brave, begin to explore this new land, while Getafix works to understand how to recreate the potion that gives them superhuman strength.
Asterix is captured by a Native American tribe and bound beside Getafix, who reveals that the Romans had cast him ashore near the tribe’s medicine man. Obelix rescues Minihooha, the chief’s daughter, from a bison stampede, and his display of strength earns the chief’s respect. Asterix and Getafix are freed, and the Gauls join the tribe for the evening rites. Getafix then humiliates the tribe’s medicine man with his magic, and he gifts Minihooha a dose of magic potion to teach the medicine man a lesson for mistreating her, a moment that foreshadows the conflict to come. The medicine man visits the Gauls’ camp under a flag of peace, but he drugged them with hallucinogens in a pipe and abducts Getafix, plunging Obelix into a drug-induced amnesia.
With Obelix temporarily unavailable, Asterix must press on to rescue Getafix on his own. After Minihooha cures Obelix, the Gauls bid farewell to their hosts and return home to find the village under pressure—the Romans have run out of potion and are encroaching on their lands. Getafix, determined to restore their strength, brews a new batch of the potion. The Gauls return to the Romans’ camp, but this time they go in disguise as soldiers, slip the potion to their fellow Gauls, and unleash a bold assault to reclaim their fortress. In a final twist of fate, Lucullus meets a grisly end when Caesar’s pet panther turns on him, and Caesar himself quietly slips away to return home.
Back in their village, the Gauls celebrate their resilience with a festive feast. Obelix recounts his latest adventure, and together they sing a song that encapsulates their independence and camaraderie. The tale closes on a note of unity and triumph, with Getafix’s brewed potion once again securing the villagers’ safety and strength, while the memory of their journey into an unfamiliar land lingers as a testament to their courage and stubborn spirit.
