A series of Viking raids leaves a tribe with no one able to stand up to them. The tribe’s adviser, Cryptograf Pierre Palmade, declares that their enemies have fled, and his line about fear becoming wings is spoken with a certainty that unsettles everyone. The chief, Timandahaf, misreads this omen and decides they must find a Champion of Fear to make the tribe great—and invincible—believing that cowardice could somehow grant them flight. Cryptograf, secretly hoping to seize power from Timandahaf, goes along with the plan and suggests they search within Gaul.
On the voyage, Timandahaf is stunned to discover his daughter Abba Sara Forestier has sneaked aboard disguised as a man. Despite his anger, he reluctantly keeps her among his crew and begins to see the girl’s resolve in a new light.
Meanwhile, in the Gaulish rebel village, chief Vitalstatistix’s nephew Justforkix arrives to be trained as a man. However, his interests run to chasing girls, sending messages with a bird, and following a vegetarian diet, much to the shock of Obélix Jacques Frantz and Asterix Roger Carel. The two legendary warriors try to shape him into a warrior, but their efforts falter because Justforkix shuns violence and refuses the village’s magic potion—the source of the Gauls’ super-human strength.
When the Vikings close in, Cryptograf explains to his son Olaf how capturing Abba could secure his future as chief, painting a picture of a wife he could claim if he can produce the Champion. Olaf’s ambitions collide with the truth, and the plan grows more tangled as deception starts to unravel.
Olaf does capture Justforkix after witnessing his cowardice, forcing Asterix and Obélix to sprint into action to rescue him before Justforkix’s father arrives at their village. The pair head for Norway, determined to save the young would-be warrior, only to learn that Justforkix has fallen in love with Abba—and she with him.
Justforkix, though reluctant to leave, eventually agrees to return with them. During their perilous journey, the Viking fleet tests Justforkix’s nerve by tossing him off a cliff; Cryptograf rigs a rope that suspends him in the fog, making him seem to be the Champion in the eyes of the Vikings. Tricked into believing they’ve found a true hero, the Vikings rush back to Olaf’s wedding ceremony, leaving Justforkix to be rescued and brought home.
Before they can take him back to Gaul, Justforkix fashions a daring escape by secretly taking a share of the magic potion, and swims back to the Vikings’ village. Undeterred by the risk, he returns to Abba and rescues her, crafting an improvised hang-glider from a ship’s mast and sail to fly to safety.
Back in Gaul, Cryptograf and Olaf are exposed for their deception, and the Vikings return home in shame as Justforkix and Abba prepare to marry. The wedding ceremony nearly spirals into chaos when Cacofonix decides to sing, triggering real fear among the invaders and sending them fleeing in panic. In the aftermath, Getafix explains that true courage lies not in fearlessness, but in overcoming fear itself, a lesson that lingers long after the celebrations fade.
