Seventeen-year-old Artemisia Gentileschi, the daughter of the renowned painter Orazio Gentileschi, displays a striking artistic gift that could carry on her father’s legacy in a world that barely allows women to enter the studio. In early 17th-century Italy, women are barred from painting human nudes or joining the Academy of Arts, yet Artemisia is granted access to her father’s workshop with strict boundaries: she may study techniques, but she cannot view nude male models. Undeterred, she confronts these rules with curiosity and resolve, even bribing the fisherman Fulvio with a kiss to study his body and capture it on canvas, a bold step that signals both her daring and her hunger to learn from life.

Her path leads her to the fresco painter Agostino Tassi, a man who works in the same building as her father and is known for his night-time excesses. Artemisia seeks his guidance to master perspective and the dynamics of sight, and what begins as professional mentorship soon deepens into a complicated, intimate relationship. The two artists push each other, sharpening their craft as they navigate a volatile mix of creation and desire, blending technical instruction with personal electricity.

Eventually, the balance between art and affection disrupts the family circle when Orazio uncovers their liaison. He takes legal action, filing a lawsuit against Tassi for rape, a case that moves into the courtroom and forces Artemisia to confront her own truth under intense public scrutiny. The trial unfolds with a formal examination of her plight, as two nuns scrutinize her condition in a process steeped in the era’s beliefs about female virtue and sexuality. Artemisia’s testimony is pushed to its limits as the forces of justice, fear, and memory collide.

Throughout the proceedings, Artemisia asserts a difficult, nuanced stance—she denies being raped while insisting on the complexity of their relationship and the life they shared. In a turn that reveals the vulnerability and fear at the heart of the case, Tassi, shaken by what has happened, confesses to the act in an attempt to end the ordeal and protect Artemisia from further torment.
