Army Daze 1996

Five young men from different walks of life enlist in their National Service, told largely through Malcolm Png, Edward Yong, a nerdy and sheltered recruit; Johari Salleh, Sheikh Haikel, a laid-back hipster Malay; Krishnamoorthy, Ahamed Asad, a heroic and loving Indian lover; Ah Beng Teo, Adrian Lim, a delinquent with gangster-like swagger; and Kenny Pereira, Kevin Mark Verghese, an effeminate young man curious about women’s lifestyle. The story unfolds through Malcolm’s perspective as he documents their days in the army and the unique bond that grows among the group.

They are assigned to Hotel Company Platoon 4, where they meet a range of other recruits and begin the rough ritual of military life. Before enlistment, Malcolm crosses paths with a shady figure named Mr. X, Ong Chuen Boone who peddles a guidebook on how to play truant in the army. Krishna has a heartfelt moment with his girlfriend Lathi, and the couple faces the uncertain road ahead as they report for duty.

At the camp, the recruits bid farewell to loved ones and steel themselves for the months ahead. They are introduced to their tough drill instructor, Corporal Ong, Daniel Gan Wei Teck, who oversees their first haircuts and the awkward introductions that come with any new unit. The platoon heads out on a field camp, and Kenny and Malcolm strive to make their campsite more comfortable, only to be punished with guard duty by Sergeant Monteiro. Krishna tries to slip in with them after borrowing Malcolm’s guidebook as a makeshift excuse for absence, testing the limits of their camaraderie and their rules.

On duty, Krishna faints after a tense scuffle with a python, and Malcolm rushes to find him. Second Lieutenant Collin Heng and CPL Ong visit Krishna’s family, a moment that deepens the sense of connection among the recruits. Krishna and Lathi eventually reconcile over a long-distance call, and Malcolm learns to stand up to his overprotective mother, a personal victory that mirrors the broader theme of growing up under pressure. The five men deepen their bonds as their training concludes, their shared experiences turning into a sense of brotherhood and a shared dream for the future. Graduation brings a bittersweet mix of relief and anticipation as families arrive to collect their new graduates. A final group moment captures their hard-won friendship and the quiet pride they feel in what they’ve accomplished. SGT Wendy Chung introduces Deanna Yusoff, Deanna Yusoff, whom Johari admires, adding a note of cultural homage to the ceremony. Ah Beng becomes a cellphone manager and, in a surprising turn of luck, wins the lottery, using the windfall to buy a diamond ring for SGT Wendy Chung, a gesture that captures both his mischievous spirit and the sense of possibility that the film has nurtured throughout.
