1967, in Miranda, a fictional Latin American country, the dictator General Abalorio tightens his grip on power as the story centers on Arcibel Alegría, a journalist who mostly writes about chess. Arcibel, a non-political, solitary man who is separated and a father to a two-year-old daughter, finds himself hauled off to jail after a scheduling mix-up at the newspaper he works for. Inside, he is forced to confront a reality he had never imagined, far from the quiet life he leads on the outside.
