Four elderly residents at a nursing home form a small circle of friends, passing the days with cards and shared stories when they feel up to it. The most frail among them, Frank Ernest Borgnine, is slowing down and relies on multiple medications, including insulin, as he endures past strokes that have left his body unpredictable. Nearby, June Piper Laurie lives with dementia, often struggling to recognize people or carry on conversations that stay in step with the moment. Ella Anne Meara is visibly upset after a fall that left her hip fragile, while Alice Doris Roberts keeps a buoyant spirit and clings to the hopeful dream of winning the lottery.

Frank’s circle of friends expands to his son Jeffrey Richard Schiff and his grandson Jack Cameron Monaghan, who visit regularly and bring warmth into the day-to-day routine. The bond deepens when Paul Sunkrish Bala, one of the orderlies, becomes a caretaker who looks after Frank with steady care, establishing a quiet trust between patient and staff.

On Frank’s request, Jeffrey Richard Schiff brings into the nursing home a memory box that Frank has assembled over the years. The box holds mementos related to his late wife and his war buddies, and among the items is a gun that Frank thought was empty. Jeffrey leaves it at the home, hoping Frank can show it to Paul and perhaps find some solace in his memories.
