Julie, Vanessa Williams, a successful Manhattan reporter-turned-columnist in her mid-40s, believes she has it all—a thriving career, a rent-controlled apartment, a loving boyfriend Michael Boatman as Ted, and an adorable six-year-old son named Jake whom she conceived via an anonymous sperm donor.

Her seemingly perfect world is jolted during an emergency parent-teacher conference, when she learns Jake has been acting up, needs to be “tested,” and is on the brink of expulsion. The moment exposes cracks in Julie’s carefully balanced life and raises questions about what really defines family, responsibility, and happiness.

Overwhelmed, Julie instinctively blames herself, especially since her mother Mona has often made her feel inadequate for not being a stay-at-home mom. Julie refuses to concede that her mother could be right, and instead she leans on the idea that the issue lies in the donor. She pursues clarity through a private investigator and eventually learns the identity of the donor, meeting him—Paul, a struggling actor and law school dropout.

Julie has no intention of revealing her identity to him; she needs to check her sources, gather the facts, and move on. But Jake instantly bonds with Paul, and no matter how hard Julie tries to keep Paul from complicating her life, the more he begins to fall for her, and she finds she too is falling badly for him even while her boyfriend is pushing to set a wedding date. The tension between personal past, parental expectations, and newfound feelings creates a delicate, prickly balance as each character weighs what family means and how far they’re willing to go for love.
