Anatomy of a Love Seen 2014

Zoe, Sharon Hinnendael, and Mal Jill Evyn are two actresses who meet while filming a movie where they’re cast as lovers, and they quickly fall in love. Everything seems to go smoothly until months later, when Mal abruptly abandons Zoe just as Zoe’s career begins to take off. On the surface, Mal seems to have little reason to leave, but the truth is deeper: she’s a former drug addict who fears Zoe might leave her, so she ends things first to protect herself.

The two are drawn back together when they’re called back by Kara, Marina Rice Bader, the film director, to re-shoot their lovemaking scene for TV network distribution. At first, they struggle to act as both have pent-up feelings for one another, but Anne Pasternak, Constance Brenneman, the film’s producer, steps in to help them work professionally and to offer personal support. Zoe receives a call from her agent telling her she shouldn’t have any shooting today. Suspicious, she confronts Kara, who reveals that there is no broadcast deal and that she orchestrated this plan to force Zoe and Mal back together. Zoe is upset and begins to have a nervous breakdown, but Anne steadies the situation while Mal consoles Zoe and seals the moment with a kiss, allowing them to push through the first scene.

With the mood lightening, Zoe and Mal share a quiet moment before the next shot. Zoe questions why Mal left her, and Mal explains, yet Zoe remains hurt and the two briefly argue. Kara and Anne step in again, and Kara finally confesses that there was no broadcast deal—she had been secretly astonished to witness Zoe and Mal fall in love six months earlier on the same set. Kara cancels the shoot, and Anne presses for the truth, having worked with Kara for fifteen years. Kara responds by praising Anne as her biggest fan, and Anne, moved, confesses her love with a kiss that surprises Kara.

The tension between Zoe and Mal peaks when Zoe bluntly tells Mal that she is exactly like her mother, a comment that upsets Mal enough to lock herself in the restroom. Zoe apologizes, but Mal does not yield. Zoe steps outside and sits in the middle of the road, while Mal searches for her. They finally meet again, tears in their eyes, and an unspoken understanding hangs between them.

The film closes with a flashback to six months earlier, when Zoe and Mal fell in love on set after filming their lovemaking scene, returning home to share a real, off-camera night of intimacy that marks the start of their complicated, resonant bond.
