Josie is a devoted mother of three who journeys to Hong Kong to work as a nanny for a wealthy couple, hoping the higher wages will lift her family out of hardship. The choice is bittersweet, because she knows the time apart will weigh heavily on her children, especially after her husband dies not long after she leaves. She returns with gifts and savings meant to spark a new business, but the homecoming brings a quiet tension rather than celebration.

The atmosphere at home is uneasy from the start. The younger children, Daday and Michael, stay cautious around their mother, while the oldest, Carla, meets Josie with pointed resentment and little in the way of welcome. Carla’s resentment quickly evolves into an act of defiance: she openly challenges Josie’s authority, tests boundaries, and begins to pursue relationships with boys her mother would disapprove of. Alongside this, Carla’s burgeoning sexuality becomes more visible, and she slips into using drugs, revealing a deeper fracture within the family.

The film follows the slow, painful process of repair. The younger siblings gradually warm to their mother again, finding ways to bridge the gulf that years of separation created. Yet Carla’s attitude remains a focal point of tension, pushing Josie to confront the consequences of choices made in her absence.
