The story begins with a mysterious figure determining that a human sacrifice is necessary to prevent evil forces from rising. After seeing a news report about a heroic act, they select Wally Griswold, justifying the choice with the cynical belief that all police officers are inherently corrupt.
Unaware of the plot against him, Wally receives a mysterious letter informing him that he has won a free stay at a bed and breakfast in Amityville, New York. Despite never entering a contest, he travels to the location and is welcomed by the owner, Samantha. While helping him settle in, Samantha intentionally conceals the truth: the house is haunted by a murderous spirit named Jessica.
