In the quiet cornfields of a South Indian village, a British forest ranger in charge of the fields hears eerie noises echoing from deep within the stalks. When he searches with his loyal dog, the animal is dragged into the crops and brutally slain by a mysterious beast named Ambuli, and the ranger himself follows soon after. The scene shifts to the 1970s, at Arthur Wellington College, where a lively farewell party marks the end of an era. Two college friends, Amudhan and Vendhan, decide to stay behind in the college hostel for the vacation, while Amudhan’s girlfriend Poongavanam remains in the nearby village of Poomanandhipuram, which sits eerily quiet during these months.

One night, Amudhan makes a tense journey through the cornfields to reach Poongavanam, but Ambuli strikes again, forcing him off his cycle and into a desperate retreat back to the college. The fear tightens its grip as the two friends venture into the night to uncover the truth. They stumble upon a wooden cabin in the heart of the fields—the former home of the ranger—and there they meet a reclusive man named Sengodan, who guards the land with a wary intensity. His stern appearance raises alarms in Amudhan and Vendhan, who sense there is more to him than meets the eye, prompting a narrow escape from the cabin.

The next day, Amudhan questions Vethagiri, Vendhan’s father, about Ambuli and Sengodan. Vethagiri’s fear and anger reveal a long history of tragedy: Ambuli has claimed many lives in the fields, driving him toward alcohol as a coping mechanism. He recounts a chilling origin story, rooted in fear and folklore: about forty years earlier, on the day of a solar eclipse, a pregnant woman named Ponni entered the village and gave birth to a child who was not entirely human. Ponni’s decision to spare Ambuli, followed by her suicide, sets the stage for a creature that would haunt the fields. Sengodan’s vengeance toward Wellington—the scientist whose experiments touched this tragedy—adds another layer of conflict, as the story of a man and his dangerous ambitions unfolds.

As Amudhan and Vendhan dig deeper, they uncover the journals and films collected by the late Sir Arthur Wellington, founder of the college and a wartime scientist. The documents reveal Wellington’s secret project: to breed a race of genetically-modified humans with a lifespan far beyond normal limits, using Ponni as a test subject and injecting Neanderthal DNA. The plan derails when Ambuli’s birth is altered by harsh sedatives and solar radiation during a eclipse, leading to a mutation that makes her extraordinarily vulnerable to sunlight. Seemati’s frightened warning to Ponni—to destroy Ambuli—turns into a tragic choice, and Ponni’s decision to let Ambuli live leads to a chain of consequences that ripple through the village. Sengodan’s fury toward Wellington intensifies as he contends with a history of experimentation and personal loss that culminates in his own acts of violence.

With the truth in hand, Amudhan and Vendhan resolve to confront Ambuli, and Poongavanam, along with their ally Velpari, joins the plan to end the terror once and for all. The group faces a dangerous night as they track Ambuli to the caves, where an ape-like figure emerges from the darkness. The confrontation escalates into a full-scale clash: the army and police arrive, aided by Sengodan’s fierce courage, and Ambuli is finally subdued with tranquilizers and secured in a box. Sengodan bears serious injuries in the struggle, and in a final twist he explains his past actions: he had killed Gugan, after mistaking him for Ambuli, and he was trying to protect Poongavanam from the threat. The villagers gather to honor Sengodan, Marudhan, Amudhan, and Vendhan for ending the long fear that had gripped the region.

Yet the ending leaves a chilling hint of the story yet unfinished. As the credits roll, a final shot returns to Dehradun, where the box carrying Ambuli begins to move and cracks open. The implication is clear: Ambuli has not been stopped for good, and the hunt will continue.
