In the backdrop of the 2008 economic crisis, single mother Rita Carmichael and her teenage daughter Ruthie set out on a quest for a new beginning in Boston. However, their aspirations hit a snag when car troubles deplete their already limited finances, leaving them stranded in a quaint Midwestern town.

In her moment of need, Rita finds herself at Tiny’s Diner, where she reaches out to the kind-hearted owner, Marty, for help. His generosity offers Rita and Ruthie a temporary refuge, enabling them to adjust to their new existence. As they carve out a routine, Ruthie strikes up an unexpected friendship with Pam, a waitress also facing personal battles.

With the passage of time, Rita takes significant steps to rebuild her life and attracts the attention of a local real estate agent, Vic. His support aids them in acquiring a modest home, allowing mother and daughter to gradually reclaim stability. Ruthie, on the other hand, starts high school and soon finds herself mingling with a group prone to substance abuse. After facing a three-day suspension, she finally begins to distance herself from that negative influence.

However, when Rita falls ill, she resorts to self-medicating with Nyquil. Though she initially recovers, her health remains fragile. As Ruthie returns to school, she finds her priorities shifting away from her troublesome friends. One daunting night at the diner, trouble looms when a group of young men shows up after hours, leading Rita to send Ruthie home for her safety.

Feeling anxious, Ruthie comes back to discover the group attempting to assault Pam in the diner’s parking lot. With adrenaline pumping, she rushes inside to retrieve a gun hidden behind the counter. Motivated by a fear born from her mother’s past vulnerabilities, Ruthie confronts the attackers, brandishing the weapon and threatening to shoot if they don’t let Pam go.

Rita soon arrives, taking charge and successfully driving the assailants away. Yet, her own intoxication invites scrutiny regarding her awareness during her daughter’s critical moment. As underlying tensions brew, concerns about Ruthie’s actions surface, and the repercussions of their desperate bid for survival start to manifest.

Supporting Pam, both women unite to encourage her to reclaim her former beauty and uplift her spirits. Meanwhile, Rita dedicates herself to AA meetings, reigniting a bond with Lee, a diner patron who once faced his own humiliating struggles after losing his wife several years earlier.

As their relationship flourishes, Lee and Rita find themselves grappling with the realities of their financial plight, which threatens foreclosure on Ruthie’s home. Fortunately, Lee’s skills as a dentist provide them a temporary sanctuary in his home. Initially reluctant to embrace this change, Rita finds comfort in the arrangement, especially when the diner closes its doors for good.

As time moves forward, Ruthie’s restlessness resurfaces, prompting Rita to contemplate another attempt to leave. When Ruthie pushes back, she makes a bold decision to attend a high school party, where she encounters an old acquaintance in an awkward situation. Disheartened and exasperated, Ruthie seeks solace in Pam’s trailer, only to be discovered the next morning by Rita, who helps her navigate through their issues.

In a touching moment, Rita allows Ruthie, now 15, to take the wheel for the first time. They embark on a scenic drive surrounded by trees bursting with colors—a poignant representation of Ruthie’s long-awaited discovery of a place she can truly call home.
