Alexander Finn is a thoughtful high school student who moves through his days alongside fellow outcasts Darius Marcus Scribner and Stuart, trying to carve out a place where they belong. He quietly harbors a crush on Lo Ryan Whitney, a girl who also catches the eye of the popular Cole Winnard. Their school life is a balancing act between popularity, perception, and the fear of standing out, and Alexander often finds himself torn between ego and sincerity.

A multimedia class assignment puts the spotlight on personal identity, as their teacher, Mr. Eskin Jason Nash, announces a project centered on the theme “you.” At the same time, Alexander’s older brother EJ Nathan Kress is immersed in a venture company, participating in a cutting-edge app challenge that uses General Electric’s cloud technology to improve everyday life. EJ is determined to ride the wave of success and to become the next big tech figure, and he keeps nudging his colleagues, especially Ellie Mikaela Hoover, to push forward with his ideas.

With their parents away on a honeymoon, Stu pushes Alexander to seize a moment and impress Lo by hosting a party. The plan is simple in intention but risky in execution: use the party as a stage for a more impactful presentation, and simultaneously test a prototype that EJ believes could change the way people use their devices. Ellie agrees to take one of EJ’s concepts—designed to curb phone addiction and address climate concerns—and urges EJ to submit a working prototype. The trio hatches a quid pro quo: Alexander will build the prototype, and they’ll rally partygoers to install it and switch off their phones as a live demonstration. The result is a rare moment of collaboration that begins to bloom, and the prototype, now named Cloud Maximizer 2.0, is completed and accepted.

At the party, a decision to enforce a strict phone rule becomes a focal point for the night. EJ extends invitations to Owen Reed Simon Rex, Ellie Mikaela Hoover, and Jonathan Ryan Pinkston. The atmosphere grows loud and messy, and Cole’s social standing takes a hit as he witnesses the party’s momentum upend his own reputation. In a cruel turn, he gaslights Lo by revealing the hidden mission behind the party after he overhears Darius Marcus Scribner criticize Alex for chasing the plan more than the friendship. The tension intensifies, and Jonathan secretly calls the cops over underage drinking, leading to a raid. EJ and Owen are briefly arrested but released the next day, while Lo ends her relationship with Alex, shaken by the night’s events.

Back in class the next day, Mr. Eskin reminds the students that the presentation is due, and Alex uses the moment to reflect and reset. He stands before the class and apologizes for letting ego eclipse empathy, admitting that masking his true self didn’t help anyone. In a climactic reveal, EJ appears on stage and unveils the app: IRL (an acronym for “in real life”). The presentation marks a turning point, as the school community begins to see the value of authentic connection alongside technical innovation.

In the wake of the demonstration, the group—led by Mr. Eskin and supported by Nine and EJ—forms a real partnership, turning their idea into a shared venture: the founders of IRL. Lo and Alex begin to reconcile, rebuilding trust and friendship with Darius and Stu. The experience leaves them with a clearer sense of identity, the understanding that ambition must be balanced with responsibility, and the realization that true progress often comes from collaboration, humility, and the courage to be genuine.
