Meenakshi, a cheerful Marathi girl, finds her world spinning when she falls for Surya, a talented Tamil artist whose presence seems to brighten every room she enters. She comes from a bustling, deeply affectionate family that anchors her days in a whirl of noise and love: a wheelchair-bound grandmother who is blind yet carries gold teeth, a father who smokes four cigarettes at once, a mother named Savitri devoted to the idea of marriage, and a brother named Nana whose happiness comes from his four dogs. The colony’s community garbage bin sits stubbornly in front of their home, a constant reminder of life’s messier realities, yet Meenakshi escapes into dreams where she dances and acts out scenes from her favorite stars—Madhuri, Sridevi, Juhi, and others—only to wake to the choking stench of the garbage trucks.

To carve out some independence, Meenakshi begins working as a librarian at the local Shree Ramswami Dhurandhar College of Arts. The library becomes her sanctuary, even as the overwhelming odor of rot nearby feeds her strange affinity for anything that smells pleasant and her aversion to anything that stinks. There, she meets Maina, also known as “Gaga Bai” and played by Anita Date-Kelkar, whose flamboyant outfits inspired by pop icon Lady Gaga add color to the daily routine. A nearby toilet in the library’s vicinity is suddenly shut down by Meenakshi, who explains that the job means money and freedom for her.

Meanwhile, Meenakshi’s family is actively seeking a suitable groom through a matrimonial advertisement, offering a dowry that includes 30 grams of gold and the grandmother’s gold teeth. Yet Meenakshi, who does not believe in arranged marriages, longs for a prince of her own and dreams of a wedding that feels like a movie. One such prospect, Madhav, arrives with his parents; they are polite and caring, and at first glance seem like a good match. But Meenakshi is not drawn to him—she cannot forget Surya and is unable to picture a life with anyone else.

As Meenakshi’s intrigue toward Surya grows, she learns that he is an art student whose life is wrapped in mystery. Word from Maina and Pakkada, the campus tea boy who helps around the department, paints Surya as an alcoholic and a drug addict. They claim that Surya’s father’s death was tied to debt he incurred through his drinking, and they hint that many artists rely on substances to sculpt their personas and feed their creativity. Nevertheless, Meenakshi’s faith in Surya remains, and she seeks out Surya herself to uncover the truth. She even learns Tamil with Pakkada to better understand him, stubbornly resisting the idea that he is “just another addict.”

When the engagement date with Madhav arrives, Meenakshi cannot bring herself to offer any real emotion to the prospective groom; instead, she slips away in search of Surya. The wedding preparations move forward, and Nana’s life takes a comic turn when Meenakshi vanishes on the engagement day, only to reappear later at Surya’s fragrance-sticks factory, where the scent that drew her to Surya first began to take form in his world. Surya finally confronts her there, revealing that while he studies art by day, he also helps run the agarbatti factory at night, a responsibility his mother expects him to manage. His true passion, he explains, is painting, and he lives a double life to honor both his artistic dream and his family duties.

Meenakshi learns that the captivating fragrance she associates with Surya stems from his involvement with the agarbatti business rather than a personal scent he carries. This revelation does not break their bond; instead, it clarifies the life Surya leads and why his path diverges from the conventional expectations around him. Through open conversation and a rekindled understanding, Meenakshi finds a way to honor both her dream of a love-filled life and Surya’s artistic calling.
