In 2015, an alien race known as the Mimics lands in Germany and swiftly conquers much of continental Europe, leaving behind a trail of devastation and millions of lives lost. By 2020, humanity unites under the United Defense Force (UDF) to push back and reclaim their world. The tide begins to turn after a pivotal victory at Verdun, where the celebrated war hero Rita Vrataski proves instrumental in turning the battle in humanity’s favor.

Across the channel, Britain’s UDF forces prepare for a major invasion into France, a plan that could tilt the balance of the war. General Brigham orders a frontline broadcast assignment for Major William Cage, a public affairs officer who is more comfortable behind a camera than in combat. Cage’s attempt to browbeat Brigham into changing the plan backfires, landing him in hot water and earning him a demotion to Private. He’s dispatched to a noisy, chaotic base at Heathrow Airport where he’s forced to join the invasion as infantry, marched into a unit led by Master Sergeant Farell and a rough-edged group known as J-Squad.

The invasion day arrives with a brutal, almost cinematic assault on a French beach. The Mimics ambush the landing with ruthless efficiency, decimating the defenders. In a desperate moment, Cage takes up a Claymore mine and manages to kill a large Alpha Mimic, but the price is steep: he’s engulfed in the creature’s blood and dies as the blast tears through the battlefield.

Yet death is not the end for Cage. He wakes up back at Heathrow, confronted with the same morning and the same impossible assignment. He tries to warn against the invasion, only to cycle through a series of brutal loops in which he dies on the beach and reawakens again. With each reset, his instincts sharpen, his battlefield knowledge grows, and his skills—ranging from weapons handling to quick tactical decisions—become more precise. He begins to see patterns others miss and discovers that his repeated deaths carry a strange, almost cinematic persistence.

In these looping mornings, Cage seeks to save Rita Vrataski, the very warrior who previously turned the tide at Verdun. Though she initially comes to see him as a curiosity—perhaps even a threat—the loops force her to recognize a shared power: something within Cage mirrors what she once could do. She ultimately lets him know that his knowledge matters and bids him to find her again in the next cycle.

As the looping days unfold, Vrataski and Cage piece together crucial truths about the Mimics. A scientist named Dr. Carter reveals that the Mimics operate as a vast, single organism controlled by a central intelligence known as the Omega. When Alpha Mimics are killed, the Omega restarts the loop and refines its tactics, ensuring the Mimics learn and adapt. Vrataski explains that their earlier victory at Verdun might have been a calculated ruse by the Mimics, meant to make human forces overly confident and overcommit to a costly push.

Driven by this knowledge, Cage trains with Vrataski and recruits allies to reach the Omega. Their journey leads them toward a vision—a dam in Germany where the Omega might be concealed—followed by a pursuit that strains their bond. Vrataski’s fear and past losses haunt her; she fears the pain of watching Cage die again and again. For a moment, she steps back, but Cage presses on, determined to end the cycle.

In a pivotal turn, Cage and Vrataski locate a prototype transponder capable of targeting the Omega, a device they acquire by pressing into Brigham’s office and convincing him to hand it over. The plan leads them to the Omega’s lair beneath the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. During their escape, Cage sustains injuries that temporarily strip him of his loop-immunity through a necessary blood transfusion, but the team continues toward their final confrontation.

With Vrataski’s help, Cage rallies J-Squad once more and uses his intimate knowledge of their unit to guide them to the Omega. They reach Paris and participate in a daring, sacrificial mission that enables Cage and Vrataski to approach the Omega. In a deeply emotional moment, Vrataski expresses her bittersweet connection to Cage as she kisses him, knowing the costs of the mission. An Alpha closes in, killing Vrataski and gravely wounding Cage, yet Cage counters with a decisive act: he deploys grenades that destroy the Omega and bathes in the Omega’s blood, the power of the cycle finally breaking.

Cage blinks back to a moment just before his first meeting with General Brigham, witnessing a news report declaring all Mimics dead after a mysterious energy surge in Paris. He returns to Heathrow and reunites with Vrataski, who does not recognize him at first. The story ends with Cage sharing a quiet, knowing smile, leaving the fate of their world hanging on the slim thread of this last, hard-won victory.
