In the dusty corner of the archive, they uncover documents and an old 16 mm film that identifies Sylvester as part of a larger group of so-called “criminals” that includes notable figures: Carter Hall, Kent Nelson, Jay Garrick, Alan Scott, Ted Grant, Abigail Hunkel, Wesley Dodds, and Al Pratt. The documentary footage paints a startling picture of these individuals as a team—secret protectors who operated in the shadows. Yet the film also exposes a troubling chapter: the group is arrested in a sweeping investigation, only to be released amid allegations of jury tampering and falsified evidence, leaving their names to float in rumor rather than in record.

As Clark and Chloe delve deeper, the danger intensifies. Icicle tracks down and kills Wesley Dodds after Dodds dreams of him, and Clark discovers Dodds’s body in a harsh reminder that this case is personal and lethal. Pursuing leads, Clark traces Carter Hall to a museum, hoping for answers about the killer’s next move. There, he encounters Kent Nelson, who mutters to himself while clinging to a small bag. Using his x-ray vision, Clark glimpses a helmet inside the bag that activates on its own, a sign that the mystery runs far deeper than a simple murder.

With tensions rising, Carter withdraws to protect the secret of his true identity. Meanwhile, Chloe enlists Oliver Queen to recover Sylvester’s staff. Yet the staff has already fallen into the hands of a high school student named Courtney Whitmore, who has adopted the moniker Stargirl. Before Oliver can reclaim the relic, Kent appears and uses the staff to teleport both himself and Courtney back to the museum. In that pivotal moment, the truth snaps into place: Sylvester’s old team was the Justice Society of America, a group united under Carter Hall’s leadership.

This revelation brings a shift in alliances as Kent, Carter, and Chloe realize they must shield the younger generation from a renewed threat. Kent reclaims the mantle of Doctor Fate by donning the Helmet of Nabu, stepping into a vigilant role that links past heroes to today’s challenges. The investigation continues to orbit the fates of Dodds and Pemberton, leading Clark to confront the possibility that the killer’s identity lies with Joar Mahkent, a patient in Metropolis General’s psychiatric ward. Doctor Fate probes Joar’s mind, and Clark’s fate is glimpsed—one that suggests he is destined to guide a new wave of heroes. Fate and Clark are teleported to the museum, where the truth about the killer’s lineage and motives begins to untangle.

The real assassin emerges as Joar Mahkent’s son, who hunts the Justice Society for the decades-old injury inflicted upon his father, casting a vendetta across generations. He is hired by a shadowy organization known as Checkmate and ordered by Agent Amanda Waller to target Stargirl and the rest of the JSA. In response, Oliver tracks Courtney to ensure she remains safe, while she chooses to step into the breach as Stargirl, intent on drawing Icicle out. A tense confrontation unfolds: Hawkman grabs Oliver and hurls him through a Watchtower window, warning that interference will bring severe consequences.

Meanwhile, Checkmate takes a broader hand in the affair by sending Lois Lane an anonymous package containing the truth about the Justice Society. Clark awakens at the museum to hear Doctor Fate’s ominous prophecy—that his destiny is to lead a new generation of superheroes and to one day outmatch his greatest foe, Lex Luthor. Oliver and Martian Manhunter—John Jones—arrive to rescue Clark, unaware that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Stargirl are, in fact, fellow heroes. The team splits into pairs to track Icicle, and a fierce clash at the museum follows when Fate and John are attacked. Fate sacrifices himself to restore John’s Martian powers, but Icicle steals Fate’s helmet and seizes its powers for himself.

Back at the Watchtower, the group reconciles and prepares to face Icicle head-on. Icicle arrives intending to annihilate the remaining JSA members, but the assembled heroes—Clark, Hawkman, Stargirl, and Green Arrow—fight back with renewed resolve. John’s timely arrival, combined with Fate’s helmet’s power, helps turn the tide, and they manage to defeat Icicle. Carter then reveals a broader alliance: the surviving JSA members and their protégés, along with their children, are being gathered to form a new generation of superheroes ready to face today’s challenges.

Returning to the Daily Planet after a visit from Amanda Waller, Lois Lane publishes a revealing article that lifts the veil on the Justice Society, presenting them as a group of heroes who were persecuted and misrepresented by those in power. The aftermath sees Icicle transported to Checkmate’s custody, where Agent Waller ultimately orders his death in a controversial move that underscores the harsh reality of political interference in superhero affairs. The final twist comes with Tess Mercer’s true allegiance—she is revealed to be an agent of Checkmate, signaling a broader conspiracy that looms over the new era of heroes and their uncertain place in a world wary of their power.
