Sakthivel, alias Velu, R. Sarathkumar leads a peaceful life in Palani, selling home appliances on his bicycle. He resides with his sister Lakshmi and their friend Pazhani, choosing a quiet path and deliberately avoiding trouble. Velu keeps his emotions in check, but life takes a turn when a chance encounter on a bus brings him face to face with a new love, Anjali, Namitha. She’s initially wary, yet her feelings eventually soften, and she encourages Velu to dream bigger—she even nudges him to take a loan to open a gym and expand his modest business.
Everything changes the day Velu witnesses Raghavan commit a murder. He refuses to go to the police, afraid of the consequences, a choice that haunts him even as he tries to protect those he cares about. When Raghavan begins harassing a college girl, Velu’s sister intervenes, and Raghavan’s infatuation with Lakshmi crystallizes a dangerous fixation. He forces Lakshmi to marry him, forcing Velu to stand up to him and his accomplices, including a corrupt police inspector.
Anjali, perplexed by Velu’s sudden bravery, questions why he didn’t report the murder from the start. She challenges him, arguing that his earlier actions were driven by self-preservation and a desire to shield Lakshmi. In a shocking turn, Lakshmi reveals that she is not Velu’s sister at all, but the sister of Velu’s close friend, Mani [Kalabhavan Mani]. This revelation reshapes the circle of trust around Velu and sets the stage for a deeper, more personal battle.
A flashback reveals Velu’s past as a military officer. While visiting Chennai for a holiday, he encounters Inspector Eswara Pandian misbehaving with a North Indian woman. Velu intervenes, but the inspector retaliates by framing him with crimes and imprisoning him. Velu fights back, escapes, and, together with his police friend Mani, meets with the Director-General of Police to confront a system-wide corruption. The DGP admits his powerlessness, and Velu and Mani decide to take matters into their own hands, aiming to reform the police through unorthodox methods.
The duo’s crusade intensifies when Mani discovers a wine shop opposite a school where his fiancée Kanmani teaches. Velu, Mani, Kanmani, and the schoolchildren join forces to destroy the shop, and Velu even sets it ablaze. The shop’s owner, Naachiyar, vows revenge and plots to ruin the school. Velu warns him that he will be dealt with, but Naachiyar refuses to back down and crafts a plan to bomb the school. Velu and Mani race to the scene when Kanmani calls for help, saving the children and Kanmani from disaster. Mani is fatally stabbed by one of Naachiyar’s henchmen as he clings to life, passes away with the hope that his sister will become a collector, and Velu vows to honor that wish while seeking vengeance for Mani’s death.
Velu’s path of secrecy finally comes to a close after a long period of hiding to protect Lakshmi from Naachiyar’s wrath. Although a military court clears Velu of all charges, he resigns from the force to fulfill Mani’s dying wish: to see Lakshmi succeed in the civil service as a collector. In the present day, Naachiyar resurfaces, hungry for vengeance and aligned with Eswara Pandian, now a DSP, and Raghavan to destroy Velu once more. During Thaipoosam at the Palani temple, Velu is ambushed and shot, yet he recovers quickly and fights back with renewed resolve, ensuring the safety of Anjali, Pazhani, and Lakshmi as he battles the thugs, Eswara Pandian, and Naachiyar in a crowded temple ground.
Years pass, and Velu is released after serving his sentence for the killings. Lakshmi has realized Mani’s dream and become a collector herself, completing the circle of sacrifice, duty, and reform that began with Velu’s quiet life and transformed into a personal war against corruption and vengeance.
