In Madurai, veteran rooster trainer K. P. Karuppu Dhanush and Madurai Central Police Inspector Rathnaswamy Aadukalam Naren are formidable rivals in the local cockfights, with the edge often going to Pettaiikaaran, the man who dominates the arena because nobody quite knows how he keeps his birds at peak quality. Rathnaswamy and Pettaiikaaran were once protégés of the aging Doraisamy, a legendary figure who has stepped back from active competition but still holds sway as the honorary overlord of rooster fighting in South Tamil Nadu. Pettaiikaaran’s top team also features K. P. Karuppu’s own partner in the sport, Durai Kishore, a wealthy and shrewd roost trainer who runs three bars in Thiruparankundram and commands a keen eye for talent. Pettaiikaaran himself is played by Pettaikaran’s long-standing authority, V. I. S. Jayapalan, a figure whose presence looms large in every scheme around the fights.
The peace of the cockfighting world is shattered when a raid at a rural field leads to arrests, scattering Pettaiikaaran’s circle while Rathnaswamy and Durai manage to slip away. After a stern warning from the police, most are released, but Pettaiikaaran’s roosters are confiscated, and a fierce demand to recover them is issued. Pettaiikaaran orders his men to reclaim the birds by any means, and to prevent any rooster from carrying their bloodline into Rathnaswamy’s flock, he also decrees a brutal rule: kill any fowl that has mated with his roosters. Karuppu, bold and capable, travels to the railway colony at night to retrieve their birds, driven by loyalty to his ally; there, he eliminates a fowl that had mated with Pettaiikaaran’s stock and crosses paths with Irene Claude Taapsee Pannu, an Anglo-Indian woman whose beauty unsettles him even as he feels drawn to her. He silences her before slipping away, leaving Irene unsettled and curious about the shadowy man she has met.
Rathnaswamy’s insistence on one last win to satisfy an old mother’s wish clashes with Pettaiikaaran’s sense of pride. Pettaiikaaran refuses to continue the feud, believing Rathnaswamy has abandoned faith in his roosters and might rely on dirty tactics again, as in the raid. Yet Rathnaswamy presses on, and Karuppu’s bold presence begins to tilt events. Karuppu also becomes entangled with Irene; she dislikes him at first, and he does not realize the depth of her feelings as he continues to pursue her. At one point, Irene’s neighbors press her to declare who she loves—Karuppu or Dinesh Dinesh Ravi—and she points to Karuppu, only to reveal later that she lied to protect herself from Dinesh’s persistent advances. Eventually, Irene comes to appreciate Karuppu for who he is, and she falls for him in earnest.
Meanwhile, Rathnaswamy tries to coerce Ayub [Periya Karuppu Thevar] to persuade Pettai to face off in a big match, offering a substantial sum. Ayub refuses and is killed later that night in a hit-and-run accident. Durai suspects Rathnaswamy of foul play, but Pettai chooses to honor Ayub’s memory by organizing a state tournament in Ayub’s name and supporting his daughters’ marriages, seeking police approval to proceed. Rathnaswamy’s refusal to permit the tournament sparks a high-stakes bet: Pettai will field roosters against every rooster Rathnaswamy brings, and if Pettai’s bird loses even once, he will tonsure his head and publicly apologize, quitting rooster fights. If Rathnaswamy fails to beat at least one of Pettai’s roosters, the same consequence would fall on him. With the deal sealed, the grand state tournament is greenlit and funded for the spectacle.
The tournament begins with a surge of Pettaiikaaran’s power. In the opening 11 fights, Rathnaswamy’s roosters fall to Pettai’s, and he bolsters his lineup with high-bred roosters from Bangalore. Karuppu tries to enter the fray with his own rooster, hoping to repay Irene’s loan and prove his merit, but Pettai initially vetoes his participation. Undeterred, Karuppu secretly competes anyway, joining Pettai’s team in a bid to redeem his own reputation. He wins three consecutive rounds against roosters that have been spiked with steroids, earning the Best Coach Award and a prize of ₹3 lakh. The victory is bittersweet for Pettai, whose pride has been bruised by Karuppu’s rising popularity and skill. Jealousy overwhelms him, and he begins to sow distrust, insinuating ties between Karuppu and his allies and fanning suspicion within the group.
In the ensuing turmoil, Pettai’s schemes escalate. He steals Karuppu’s prize money, and when Durai’s roosters are sabotaged, Durai suspects Karuppu and becomes estranged from him. Pettai escalates the deception by telling Irene that his wife was involved with Karuppu, pushing Irene’s family to push her toward Chennai and driving her toward despair, even to the point of contemplating suicide. Pettai then orchestrates a rendezvous near a temple, luring Karuppu away while informing Durai of his plan; when Irene recovers, she reveals that Pettai has been maligning Karuppu, prompting Karuppu to confront Pettai. The truth comes out: Pettai himself stole Karuppu’s money and used manipulations to turn friend against friend. Overcome by guilt, Pettai takes his own life, unable to bear the consequences of his deceit.
Rather than expose Pettai’s plot to the world, Karuppu decides to protect Irene and their future by disappearing with her, starting anew in another city and leaving the stolen money with a trusted friend. In the end, the story follows a man who rises to the pinnacle of a brutal sport only to see his life unravel through jealousy, manipulation, and loss, with a final choice to walk away from vengeance and build a new life with the woman he loves. Their escape preserves a fragile hope for a quieter future beyond the roar of the roosters and the glare of rivalry.
