Elizabeth Bayley Seton, America’s first native‑born saint and founder of the Sisters of Charity, is the focus of this biopic. After her husband’s death she converts to Catholicism, then loses two children. She establishes the Sisters of Charity in the United States and opens the nation’s first Catholic schools. Seton died in 1826 and was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1975.

Elizabeth Bayley Seton Kate Mulgrew (1774-1821) is a happily married New York Episcopalian socialite and mother of five whose life is upended when her husband, William Seton Robin Clarke, dies of consumption in Italy after his shipping business goes bankrupt. As a widow with five children, she opens a small school to support herself and her family.
She decides to convert to Catholicism, a choice that sparks protest and distaste from her friends and family. Cast as a social outcast, she and her daughters seek refuge in Baltimore. Under the wing of John Carroll Lorne Greene, the first American Catholic bishop, she opens a school, establishes a religious routine, and takes religious vows, thus becoming Mother Seton.
