A Ticklish Affair 1963

Commander Key Weedon, a skilled U.S. Navy pilot, is dispatched to investigate a mysterious S.O.S. signal spotted in the San Diego area near NAS North Island. He soon learns the distress comes from a six-year-old boy named Grover Martin, whose unusual plea is sparked by the blinking light that his Uncle Uncle Simon, an airline pilot, gave him as a gift.

The child’s mother, Amy, a beautiful widow, is careful about who she lets into her life. She carries a hopeful, longing for roots—something a military lifestyle rarely allows—and she has a wary view of naval officers, having grown up as a military child herself. Yet Key’s presence quicky wins the trust of all three Martin children, and Amy finds herself drawn to him even as she weighs the prospect of a future that could mean more movement and more uncertainty.

Despite the growing affection between them, Amy’s heart keeps a cautious distance when Key receives orders to go to Italy, and she declines his marriage proposal, though their love remains clear and deep. In the meantime, Uncle Simon unveils a dangerous new “treat” for Grover and his brothers: he ties them to helium weather balloons and flies them as one would a kite. The risk escalates when Grover unties his tether and drifts miles away over San Diego, triggering a citywide rescue effort.

The Navy launches large-scale operations to bring the boy home, and the dramatic moment comes when Key descends from a Navy blimp on a rope ladder to reach the drifting child. The successful rescue leaves Amy overwhelmed with relief and gratitude, and she comes to a decisive realization: wherever his career winds up, Key is the man she wants by her side.
