A Private’s Affair 1959

Two men from New York—Luigi J. Maresi, Sal Mineo, a hip beatnik-in-training, and Jerry Morgan, Barry Coe from Long Island—find themselves heading into Army basic training in New Jersey, joined soon after by Mike Conroy, Gary Crosby, a rugged rancher from Oregon. The trio forms an unlikely unit as they navigate drills, camaraderie, and the small freedoms they hold onto while under the watchful eye of their training officers. Their shared musical talent becomes a beacon: the three G.I.s can sing, and their harmonies catch the ear of a television producer in New York, which offers them a hopeful shot at performing on a live program that could change the course of their days in uniform.

At a lively dance, Luigi falls for Marie, Christine Carère, a neighbor of Jerry, who in turn develops a romantic interest in Louise Wright, Terry Moore. A WAC named Katie Mulligan, Barbara Eden, ends up accompanying Mike to the same dance, weaving together flirtations with the strains of a country’s heartbeat in the background. In parallel, Elizabeth Chapman, Jessie Royce Landis, Assistant Secretary to the Army, faces a moral and legal dilemma of her own: she must decide what happens to a six-year-old Dutch girl whose mother has died. To secure custody, she chooses to marry the girl’s gravely injured father. By a twist of fate, an unconscious Jerry is wheeled into the scene and ends up wed to Elizabeth, who had no idea what the girl’s father looked like, precipitating a dizzying cascade of misunderstandings and mistaken loyalties.

As the situation spirals, Jerry finds himself repeatedly arrested or brought to psychiatrists while he insistently claims he has been accidentally married to a high-ranking Army officer. The uproar touches the highest levels of authority and loyalty, forcing everyone involved to confront the fine lines between duty, love, and the absurdity that can erupt when two worlds collide.
