A Leap in the Dark 1980

Mauro Ponticelli has been raised by his older sister Marta Ponticelli, a bond that once felt protective but gradually sours as Marta wrestles with mounting mental strain and fantasies of suicide. Mauro, meanwhile, is consumed by a demanding career and a life that has pushed him toward a hermit-like rigidity, leaving him emotionally distant and fraught with his own sense of isolation.

Marta’s fragile stability edges toward hope when Mauro introduces her to Giovanni Sciabola, a young and talented actor who also carries a criminal record. The two form a close friendship, and Giovanni begins to take Marta out with him with enviable frequency. For Marta, this new companionship feels like a revival of independence and warmth she has rarely felt, a contrast to the stifling routine of living under Mauro’s watchful eye.

Yet this budding bond casts a longer shadow over Mauro. His jealousy grows as he watches Marta’s autonomy unfold, and he starts to fear lose-lose outcomes: a life where Marta drifts away or a life where his own grip on control becomes untenable. The tension escalates when he acts on a troubling impulse, signing an arrest warrant against Giovanni, convinced that proximity to Giovanni could threaten Marta’s finances and security. The situation erupts when Giovanni, after vandalizing Mauro’s office, flees, leaving Mauro with a sense of betrayed resolve that seems to confirm his darkest fears.

As Marta’s connection with Giovanni endures, her sense of security is rekindled, and she decides to leave Mauro’s house, seeking a path that feels more her own. But Mauro is unable to redefine his relationship with his sister or come to terms with the autonomy she’s gaining. The story culminates in a devastating and irrevocable act: Mauro, unable to relinquish the hold he has fought so hard to maintain, loses his grip on reality and ends his life by throwing himself through the window of his own home—the same desperate act he once imagined as a way to rid himself of the sister he both protects and resents.
