An aging, anthropomorphic dog, tired of life in cartoons, returns home to study Shakespeare. He is voiced by [Mel Blanc], and is joined by Tosh, a character voiced by [Stan Freberg], creating a curious duo that fuels the clash between literature and animation. The dog finds his house overrun by a band of mischievous Goofy Gophers, who seem unphased by the scholar’s plans and simply move in for their own brand of hijinks. Undeterred, the dog opens a copy of Hamlet and begins to read, only to discover the Goofy Gophers sleeping inside the book, prompting him to hurl the volume out the window.

The Goofy Gophers retaliate by literally interpreting Shakespeare’s lines as practical jokes, turning stage directions into a parade of physical gags that push the dog to his limits. They roll a curtain up to his ears to annoy him, an action that playfully underscores the idea of “lending him ears.”

They also twist language into scent and flavor, as a springy moment finds them dumping Limburger cheese while the dog delivers the line, holding a rose.

The gophers then imitate the exhumed Yorick in a lively dance, a move designed to mock the dog and make him appear like a Shakespearean coward, all while the studio audience would be treated to a flurry of exaggerated reactions.

Magnets on the floor and ceiling add another layer of slapstick physics, flipping, lifting, and slinging the armored dog around the room in a whirlwind of movement and danger, all while the two gophers maintain their composed, mischievous grins.

The chaos reaches a dramatic peak when the Goofy Gophers bring in a real horse to kick the dog out of his house, a moment that lands right after his shout, “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!”
