In Milan, Vittorio Barletta, an unassuming accountant, shares a life with his wife Ada Barletta. A longtime friend of the industrialist Nicola Griffo, Vittorio works as his security guard and serves as a cover for “black funds,” a double life that weighs on him even as he tries to keep things steady at home. The couple’s routine is jolted when Vittorio is wounded during a supermarket robbery, and he is quietly replaced by a more aggressive former carabinieri marshal to handle the Griffo guard duties, a change that unsettles the balance of power around him.

As Vittorio navigates this shift, he forms a friendship with the enigmatic Sauro Civera, an agent who will become a pivotal figure in his life. With Sauro’s presence, Vittorio discovers a surprising talent for pistol shooting, growing so proficient that he begins to win shooting competitions. The newfound skill brings a strange mix of pride and danger, and when his weapon is stolen, a new pistol arrives as a gift from Sauro, intensifying the line between protection and threat.

A seemingly ordinary night out becomes a turning point: Vittorio and a police colleague go to a pizzeria, where the officer recognizes a convict who reacts with deadly violence, killing the policeman. Vittorio, though initially overwhelmed, is driven to act and fires back, killing the bandit after a moment of hesitation. The incident thrusts him into the headlines; television and newspapers hail him as a hero, yet the notoriety proves hollow and does not bring financial relief to the fragile household.

Ada’s health deteriorates, casting a shadow over the household as Vittorio struggles to balance loyalty, fear, and the pull of violence. Meanwhile, he becomes a target of taunts and pressure from those close to the Griffo clan: Nicola Griffo, Laura Griffo, and Patrizia Griffo. The threats, delivered by phone and through anonymous letters, escalate, leaving Vittorio alternately vigilant and paranoid.

A violent ambush tests Vittorio’s resolve: he shoots and wounds the attackers, but the confrontation leads to a brief prison stretch and a sense of confinement that gnaws at him. In the wake of Nicola’s decision to sever ties—forcing Vittorio to sign the sale of a phantom company—he finds himself isolated, sheltering in the family home with Ada as the world outside grows louder and more dangerous.

As the pressure mounts, Vittorio contemplates a final, humiliating act against the Griffos, but Ada, weakened by illness and love, makes a last stand to stop him.
