On a fishing and hunting trip, John Emmett finds his car breaks down in a quiet landscape. A passing stranger, a woman driving toward Santa Fe, offers a ride and asks him to share the journey, taking turns at the wheel. The two travelers carry a growing unease, the road ahead painted with a sense of unsettled purpose.
In a diner stop, a nurse-like woman pulls John aside and claims to have been following them because Ann Nicholson is an escaped mental patient of Dr. Frederick Simmons. This encounter plants seeds of doubt in John, who begins to question what is real as two policemen materialize, ostensibly investigating a murder back in Los Angeles and pulling them into a dangerous game.
As the danger intensifies, John demands the truth. Ann reveals she is an ex-German citizen who stumbled into a government plot and carries valuable transcripts embedded on a small cosmetic mirror. In order to prevent her from being committed to a mental institution, John asks Ann to marry him, while also declaring his love for her. They marry in a small town, and their bond becomes a shield against a looming threat as they press on to find the scientist who wrote those transcripts.
Together they follow a fragile trail, through towns, highways, and roadside stops, in search of the author of the transcripts. The time is tense, with suspicions flaring and loyalties tested as the two travelers rely on each other more than on the world around them.
The chase culminates in a confrontation where Simmons, revealed as a Soviet spy, and his accomplices face off against FBI and CIA agents who verify Ann’s story. The perilous encounter confirms the danger she carries, and, at last, John and Ann can savor a quiet reward: a honeymoon moment on the fishing trip John had originally planned.
