Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan (born 30 September 1975) is a prominent Nigerian actor, director, and producer who has been instrumental in reshaping Nollywood into a higher‑budget, cinema‑oriented industry. Born in Ebute Metta, Lagos, to legendary filmmaker Ade Love, he grew up in a theatrical family that included sisters Moji and brothers Gabriel, Aremu and Anu, all of whom pursued creative careers. After completing a bachelor’s degree in economics at the University of Lagos and a diploma in digital filmmaking from the New York Film Academy, Afolayan entered the film world as an actor in Tunde Kelani’s politically charged Saworoide (1999), a role that Kelani encouraged as a stepping‑stone to directing. He left a corporate banking job in 2005 to focus full‑time on cinema, debuting as a director with the supernatural thriller Irapada (2006), which earned the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Film in an African Language and marked the rise of the “New Nigerian Cinema.” His breakthrough came with The Figurine (2010), a critical and commercial success that garnered five awards at the 6th Africa Movie Academy Awards and solidified his reputation as a visionary filmmaker. Subsequent projects such as Phone Swap (2012), the colonial‑era thriller October 1 (2014), and the Netflix‑distributed Citation (2021) demonstrated his versatility across genres, while his partnership with Netflix expanded to include original titles like Swallow (2021), Aníkúlápó (2022) and Ijogbon (2023), each achieving top‑ten rankings in multiple territories. Beyond filmmaking, Afolayan serves as CEO of Golden Effects Pictures, advocates for broader distribution platforms, and, despite occasional controversy over remarks on piracy, remains a freethinker devoted to elevating African stories for global audiences. He was married to Tolu Afolayan from 2007 until their 2019 divorce, and together they have four children.
