Ben Holmes was an American film director and screenwriter who made significant contributions to early Hollywood cinema during the late 1920s and 1930s. Born on November 6, 1890, in Richmond, Virginia, Holmes established himself as a prolific filmmaker whose career spanned the transition from silent pictures to the sound era, working actively from 1928 until his death in 1943. Throughout his fifteen-year career in the motion picture industry, he demonstrated remarkable versatility by directing an impressive total of fifty-six films while also contributing his writing talents to thirty-five different screenplays. His work encompassed various genres, though he became particularly noted for his skill in crafting engaging crime dramas and light comedies that entertained audiences during the Great Depression era. Among his most notable directorial efforts were The Saint in New York (1938) and The Saint's Double Trouble (1940), which helped establish the popular Simon Templar character on screen long before the television era.
