Pixar’s ‘Gatto’ Release Date Moved Up to March 2027
Pixar Animation Studios has provided an early update for fans by shifting the release of its next original feature, Gatto. Initially scheduled for June 18, 2027, the film will now prowl into theaters three months earlier on March 5, 2027. The announcement, reported by Deadline, signals a strategic adjustment to the studio’s 2027 theatrical calendar.
Directed by Enrico Casarosa, who previously helmed Luca, Gatto centers on a black cat named Nero who finds himself indebted to a feline mob boss. The official synopsis indicates the story will see Nero form an unexpected friendship with a street musician named Maya, a relationship that may lead him to his true purpose.
Festival Preview and Artistic Vision
A first look at the film was presented to attendees at the Annecy International Film Festival in France, with Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter introducing the footage. Docter highlighted the unique visual approach, stating the team aimed to “capture the painterly texture of Venice while still preserving the depth and dimension that you’ve come to expect in a Pixar film.” He described the result as something audiences have “never seen before.”
Venice as a Character
Docter elaborated on the significance of the film’s Venetian setting, noting that while it is a “dream world” for most people, it is a “nightmare” for the protagonist, Nero. The city poses multiple threats to the black cat, including its surrounding canals, as Nero cannot swim, and its superstitious inhabitants who view black cats as bad luck. These challenges force Nero to align with the “seedier side of cat society.”
The story’s heart lies in the bond between Nero and Maya. After discovering her music, Nero is captured by the musician and becomes a house cat—a situation he did not want. Docter explained that both characters are outsiders, calling them “the two black cats of the movie.”
