KPop: Demon Hunters Sequel Officially Greenlit for 2029 Release
Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have confirmed a sequel to the record-breaking animated film 'KPop: Demon Hunters,' with a target release date set for 2029. The announcement follows the original film's historic performance as Netflix's most-watched movie and its successful limited theatrical runs.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have officially struck a deal to produce a sequel to the global phenomenon KPop: Demon Hunters. According to a report from Variety, the follow-up film is currently aiming for a release in 2029, which would mark a four-year gap from the original’s June 2025 debut. The report notes that this timeline is typical for major animated features but could potentially be accelerated.
The decision to move forward with a sequel comes as no surprise given the unprecedented success of the first film. Since its release, KPop: Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s most-watched film of all time, dominated music charts, and inspired some of the year’s most popular Halloween costumes. Its cultural impact has drawn comparisons to Disney’s Frozen franchise.
With the sequel now entering production, there is speculation that Netflix and Sony might consider producing a second and third film back-to-back to minimize the wait between future installments. This strategy would contrast with the six-year gap between Frozen and Frozen 2. In the meantime, fans can anticipate a related short film, Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story, which received a PG rating from the MPA in September 2025, though its release date has not been announced.
A key question surrounding the sequel is whether it will receive a traditional theatrical release. Netflix has historically been hesitant about wide theatrical runs but made exceptions for KPop: Demon Hunters. The film was re-released in theaters twice as a sing-along event, first in late August 2025 and again on Halloween weekend. The August release alone earned $18 million from 1,700 screens, giving Netflix its first number-one box office champion. Given this success and Netflix’s plans for an IMAX release of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew in 2029, a similar premium large-format release for the KPop: Demon Hunters sequel is a strong possibility, with potential to compete with major Disney openings.
