Dick Van Dyke is celebrating a century of life, and the iconic entertainer marked his 100th birthday with an update on his exceptional health and a reflection on his storied career. Alongside his wife, Arlene Silver, whom he credits as a “health nut,” Van Dyke maintains a routine of visiting the gym three times a week, attributing his lack of “ache or pain” to this active lifestyle. He released a book, “100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life,” to share his philosophies.
Despite a minor leg issue that he humorously chalks up to “I don’t know what,” Van Dyke remains remarkably spry. He expressed a zest for living that has only grown stronger, joking that “a hundred years is not enough.” The actor, known for his optimism, contrasts his real-life demeanor with the “angry and cantankerous” old men he has often portrayed on screen. His focus remains on leaving behind a legacy of “humor, compassion, a zest for living, a love of music.”
Van Dyke’s career spans over 70 years with iconic roles in Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. However, he recently disclosed a major franchise role he passed on. He was offered the part of James Bond in the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Van Dyke recalled playfully questioning the producer about his British accent, which he felt was not convincing enough for the serious role. He believed his audience, accustomed to his comedic characters, would not have accepted him as Bond. The part ultimately went to George Lazenby.
From classic films to voice work on The Simpsons, Dick Van Dyke’s influence on entertainment is genre-defying. His new book serves as a capstone to a life dedicated to bringing joy to audiences, ensuring the messages behind his work are remembered long after he is gone.
