28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Director Teases Weird Sequel

Director Nia DaCosta is setting a bold creative course for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the upcoming sequel in the revived zombie franchise. Taking over from original director Danny Boyle, DaCosta and star Jack O’Connell are championing the film’s unique and demented direction, promising a sequel that pushes the boundaries of the established horror world.

A Surprising New Direction

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Nia DaCosta revealed that the script for The Bone Temple contained multiple jaw-dropping moments. Jack O’Connell, who plays the antagonist Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, described the film as the “weird, demented, relative cousin” of previous entries. He emphasized that the sequel is rooted in exploring massive “what-ifs” and aims to be a shocking experience for audiences, building on the strange future teased at the end of the 2025 revival film.

Exploring the Antagonist’s Origins

The sequel will delve into the origins of O’Connell’s character, Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, the leader of a gang of acrobatic zombie hunters known as “the Jimmys.” While the character may draw inspiration from the controversial real-life figure Jimmy Savile, DaCosta clarified her intent is not to explore Savile directly. Instead, she described Jimmy Crystal as a character who “perverts things,” taking something innocent and turning it horrific.

Release Details and Franchise Future

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is officially the fourth entry in the 28 Days Later series. Its release schedule is as follows:

  • Theatrical release in the United States: January 16, 2026
  • Early screening in the United Kingdom: January 14, 2026

The story continues with Alfie Williams’ character, Spike, joining Jimmy Crystal’s gang as they encounter Ralph Fiennes’ unpredictable Dr. Ian Kelson. Following early screenings, Sony Pictures is already moving ahead with a third chapter in the new timeline, with Alex Garland expected to return to write the script.
