Tatyana Pelttser

Born on June 6, 1904 in Moscow to the renowned actor Ivan Pelttser, Tatyana Ivanovna Pelttser grew up in a multicultural household that combined German industrial roots with Jewish‑Ukrainian heritage. Her paternal ancestor, Napoléon Peltzer, arrived from the Rhineland in 1821, while her mother Esfir Borukhovna Roizen converted to Orthodoxy and took the name Yevgeniya after marriage. Tatyana stepped onto the stage at the tender age of nine, first appearing in provincial theatres before being recruited by the Moscow State Academic Drama Theatre (MGSPS) and later the Moscow Theatre of Miniatures. In 1947 she joined the Satire Theatre, where she would become one of its most beloved leading actresses, celebrated for her ability to blend comedic timing with heartfelt pathos. Her early training under the demanding repertory system forged a stamina that allowed her to perform physically demanding parts well into her sixties, an attribute that later audiences admired when she danced and sang in productions such as Wake Up and Sing and Crazy Day, or Marriage of Figaro.

Pelttser’s screen debut arrived in 1943 with the war drama She Defends the Motherland, quickly followed by the satire The Wedding (1944) and the acclaimed Simple People (1945), where she portrayed Plaksina. The role that catapulted her to nationwide fame was Lukerya in the stage‑to‑film adaptation of Bride with a Dowry (1953), a performance that showcased her earthy humor and maternal warmth. She continued to enchant viewers as the mother of the titular hero in Private Ivan (1955) and in numerous other classics such as The Twelve Months (1972) and Formula of Love (1984). In 1972 the Soviet state honored her with the title People’s Artist of the USSR, making her the first to receive this distinction from the Satire Theatre in its 48‑year history. In her later years, director Mark Zakharov crafted the role of Berta, an elderly Jewish woman, especially for her, allowing her to draw on her own cultural background. A nervous breakdown led to her hospitalization in 1992, and she passed away on July 16 of that year, leaving behind a legacy etched in both the Vvedenskoye Cemetery and the collective memory of Russian theatre and cinema.
