What's After the Movie
Stan Shaw (born July 14, 1952) is an American actor whose career spans more than five decades, beginning on the Broadway stage and expanding into a prolific film and television repertoire. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he is the son of saxophonist Eddie Shaw and Bertha Shaw, and a cousin of legendary soul singers Sam Cooke and Tyrone Davis, a lineage that infused him with a deep appreciation for performance arts. Shaw first appeared in the Chicago production of the musical Hair and later on Broadway in The Me Nobody Knows before starring in Peter Hall’s 1972 rock opera Via Galactica, showcasing his early versatility. Before acting, he was an accomplished martial‑arts instructor, holding a first dan black belt in both judo and jujutsu and a second dan in karate, which later informed many of his physically demanding roles. His screen debut came with the blaxploitation films Truck Turner and TNT Jackson in 1974, and he quickly moved into mainstream cinema with a memorable turn as "Big Dipper" Brown in Rocky (1976), a rival boxer who taunts the title character. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Shaw appeared in a wide range of genres, from the sports comedy The Bingo Long Traveling All‑Stars & Motor Kings to the war drama The Boys in Company C, the gritty family saga The Great Santini, and the horror cult classic The Monster Squad. He also earned critical praise for television work, including the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations and the legal drama The Mississippi. In later years he continued to diversify, appearing in Harlem Nights, Fried Green Tomatoes, Cutthroat Island, and the disaster film Daylight. After a quieter period in the 2000s, Shaw returned to genre filmmaking with Jeepers Creepers 3 (2017) and The Pale Door (2020), while also taking recurring roles on series such as Chicago Med and the BET+ drama The Family Business and its spin‑off The Family Business: New Orleans. His enduring presence on stage, screen, and television underscores a career marked by adaptability, physical prowess, and a commitment to challenging roles.
