Sam Gilman

Sam Gilman (February 5, 1915 – December 3, 1985) was an American film and television actor whose career spanned more than three decades, from the early 1950s to the early 1980s. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Gilman first made a name for himself as a cartoonist working for the comic‑book packager Funnies Inc. during the 1930s and 1940s, honing a visual storytelling sensibility that would later inform his screen performances. His on‑screen debut came in 1950 with a role in The Men, and he soon became a reliable character actor, appearing in such notable pictures as Sometimes a Great Notion, PT 109, The Missouri Breaks, and most memorably as Harvey Johnson in the 1961 western One‑Eyed Jacks. Over the next two decades Gilman built an extensive résumé of supporting roles, ranging from the gritty sea drama Away All Boats to the modern western Macon County Line, and his final film credit was the cult comedy National Lampoon's Movie Madness in 1982.

Beyond the silver screen, Gilman was a fixture of television westerns and dramas, joining the regular cast of ABC’s Shane in 1966 as the tavern keeper Sam Grafton. He guest‑starred on iconic series such as Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and even Star Trek: The Original Series, where he portrayed Doc Holliday in the episode “Spectre of the Gun.” An accomplished acting coach, Gilman also mentored fellow performers, and his friendship with Marlon Brando highlighted his deep connections within the industry. He married twice—first to Mildred Virginia Gilman and later to Lisabeth Hush, with whom he adopted a son and raised three children in total—before passing away in North Hollywood, California, at the age of seventy.
