Rita Corday (born Jeanne Paule Teipo‑Ite‑Marma Croset on October 20, 1920 in Papeete, Tahiti) was an American film actress whose career, though brief, left a vivid imprint on mid‑century Hollywood. The daughter of Marc Paul Croset, a Swiss‑French watch‑company representative, and Lily Wigglesworth, an English expatriate, she grew up traveling between Europe and Asia, receiving theatrical training in Switzerland, Paris and Shanghai before moving to the United States. In 1942 the studio RKO Pictures signed her to a long‑term contract, and she made her screen debut a few months later in Hitler’s Children (1943). Over the next decade she appeared in roughly thirty pictures, most of them second‑feature productions such as Dick Tracy vs. Cueball (1946), The Phantom of 42nd Street (1945) and The Blue Dahlia (1946), showcasing a versatile talent that could shift from noirish intrigue to light‑hearted romance. During the latter part of her career she was occasionally credited as Paula Corday or Paule Croset, a studio‑driven rebranding effort that aimed to emphasize her exotic allure and broaden her appeal in varied market segments. Her on‑screen persona was often that of the poised, enigmatic heroine, a casting choice that capitalized on her multicultural background and striking looks, while critics noted her ability to imbue modest roles with quiet intensity. Despite never achieving top‑tier stardom, she cultivated a loyal fan base and remains a memorable figure among classic B‑movie enthusiasts. In her personal life, Corday announced an engagement to Navy Ensign Marshall Buell in 1943, though the marriage never materialized; instead she wed film producer Harold Nebenzal in 1947. The couple welcomed two children before she retired from acting in 1954 to focus on motherhood, a decision that marked the end of her public career. Their marriage dissolved in 1961, and Corday spent her later years away from the spotlight, residing in Century City, Los Angeles. She died on November 23, 1992, after complications from diabetes surgery, and was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, leaving behind a modest yet enduring legacy in American cinema.
