Rina Morelli

Rina Morelli (born 6 December 1908 in Naples, then part of the Kingdom of Italy, died 17 July 1976 in Rome) was a distinguished Italian film and stage actress whose career spanned nearly four decades. She made her screen debut in the pre‑World War II drama An Adventure of Salvator Rosa (1939) and quickly became known for her ability to embody both aristocratic and earthy characters with subtle nuance. Over the course of her career Morelli appeared in thirty‑four films, ranging from melodramas such as Fedora (1942) and Senso (1954) to epic historical productions like The Leopard (1963), where she portrayed Princess Maria Stella Salina, a role that highlighted her refined poise. Her versatility extended to supporting parts that often stole scenes, for example the housekeeper Laura in Senso and the matriarchal figure in The Forbidden Christ (1951). On stage, she collaborated with leading directors of the Italian theatrical renaissance, sharing the spotlight with her husband, celebrated actor and dubber Paolo Stoppa, whom she married in the early 1940s. Their partnership was both personal and professional, as they frequently performed together in dramatic repertory companies, strengthening the post‑war revival of Italian theatre. Morelli’s filmography includes notable titles such as The Iron Crown (1941), Fabiola (1949) where she played Faustina, and the critically acclaimed Il bell'Antonio (1960) as Rosaria Magnano. Her performances were praised for their emotional depth, often bringing a quiet dignity to characters that might otherwise have been overlooked.
