What's After the Movie
Richard Beymer is an American actor, filmmaker, and visual artist whose career spans more than seven decades, beginning as a child performer on the Los Angeles television program Sandy Dreams and evolving into a versatile character actor known for his roles in classic cinema and cult television. He made his feature‑film debut in Vittorio De Sica’s Stazione Termini (1953) and later gained critical attention as Peter Van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), a performance that showcased his dramatic depth and earned him a contract with 20th Century Fox. In 1961 he was cast as Tony in the iconic musical West Side Story; although his singing was dubbed, the role earned him a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year – Actor and cemented his place in Hollywood history. Beymer’s subsequent work included a supporting part in The Longest Day (1962) and a turn as Ben Horne in David Lynch’s groundbreaking series Twin Peaks (1990‑1991, 2017), where his nuanced performance contributed to the show’s surreal atmosphere. Throughout the 1960s he pursued study at the Actors Studio, appeared in a variety of television dramas, and became increasingly disillusioned with the studio system, eventually stepping back from mainstream films. During the 1970s he embraced independent filmmaking, writing, directing, and starring in the avant‑garde piece The Innerview, which won the Josef von Sternberg Award at the Mannheim‑Heidelberg International Filmfestival.
Beyond acting, Beymer is an accomplished painter, sculptor, and novelist, authoring the semi‑autobiographical novel Impostor: Or Whatever Happened to Richard Beymer? in 2007 and producing a series of documentary films that explore spiritual and artistic subjects, including The Passing of a Saint (2010) and It’s a Beautiful World (2014). A committed civil‑rights activist, he participated in the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi, documenting the movement’s grassroots efforts. Residing in Fairfield, Iowa, he continues to practice Transcendental Meditation, create visual art, and mentor emerging talent, embodying a lifelong dedication to artistic exploration and social consciousness.
