Born on March 13, 1940, in Durham, North Carolina, she moved to Lumberton as a teenager where she completed high school before studying drama at Northwestern University under the legendary teacher Alvina Krause. After graduation, Fuller relocated to New York City, debuting at the East 74th Street Theater in 1960 with a production of Oh, Kay! and quickly earning her first Broadway credit in The Moon Besieged (1962). She became a replacement in the original runs of Barefoot in the Park (1963) and Cabaret (1966), demonstrating a versatility that would define her subsequent work. Fuller’s breakthrough came with the role of Eve Harrington in the musical adaptation of Applause (1970‑1972), a performance that garnered her first Tony Award nomination and cemented her reputation for portraying characters who are outwardly charming yet subtly manipulative. She continued to receive critical acclaim with a second Tony nod for her work in The Dinner Party (2001) and appeared in notable stage productions such as Rex (1976), A New Brain, and the 2017 revival of Sunday in the Park with George. On television, Fuller amassed six Emmy nominations, winning in 1982 for her portrayal of Madge Kendal in the TV movie The Elephant Man, and she has guest‑starred on series ranging from The Edge of Night to Law & Order and Mad About You. Her film credits include All the President’s Men (1976) and The Beverly Hillbillies (1993). In her personal life, she married Atlanta physician Knox Kinlaw in 1977, and the couple has one daughter.
