His editorial work on A Better Tomorrow (1986) and The Killer (1989) helped define the kinetic style that would dominate Hong Kong action cinema for decades, and his collaborations with directors such as John Woo and Tsui Hark cemented his status as a behind‑the‑scenes visionary. Transitioning to directing in the mid‑1980s, Tam delivered a string of critically acclaimed features that explored urban alienation and youth culture, most notably The Sword (1995) and The Longest Summer (1998).
