Nina Myral

Born on June 26, 1884 in the bustling 10th arrondissement of Paris, Eugénie Hortense Gruel would later enchant French audiences under her stage name Nina Myral. Starting her professional journey in the theatre world, Myral appeared in the 1905 production Tom Pitt, le roi des pickpockets at the historic Théâtre du Châtelet, quickly establishing a reputation as a versatile performer capable of blending dance, song, and dramatic nuance. Her natural charisma and disciplined training as a dancer and singer allowed her to transition seamlessly to the emerging medium of cinema, where she debuted in Henri Diamant‑Berger’s Paris pendant la guerre (1916) and continued to work with the director on several early silent films, such as Ils y viennent tous au cinéma (1917) and Le Mauvais Garçon (1922). Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Myral became a familiar face in French popular cinema, portraying a wide array of character roles—from aristocratic ladies like La comtesse in Les Bleus de l'amour (1932) to warm‑hearted matriarchs such as Tante Anna in Marseille mes amours (1939). Her talent for embodying humorous and sympathetic supporting characters earned her recurring collaborations with renowned directors including Max Ophüls, René Guissart, and Julien Duvivier, the latter featuring her in Boulevard (1960) and the sketch‑filled The Devil and the Ten Commandments (1962). In addition to her film work, Myral sustained a steady presence on stage, appearing in productions like Le Guéridon Empire (1936) at the Comédie des Champs‑Élysées, which demonstrated her enduring commitment to live performance. After a career spanning nearly six decades, she retired from the screen in the early 1960s, leaving behind a rich legacy of over sixty screen credits. Nina Myral passed away on March 30, 1975 in Draveil, France, at the age of 90, remembered as a beloved figure of French theatrical and cinematic history.
