Her career began with a debut in the Australian television drama All Saints in 2004, leading to her first film role in Suburban Mayhem in 2006. She gained widespread recognition for her work on HBO's In Treatment in 2008, earning a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for That Evening Sun in 2009. Wasikowska's breakthrough role came in 2010 as Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, catapulting her to worldwide fame. She reprised this role in 2016 in Alice Through the Looking Glass. She also starred in numerous critically acclaimed films such as Jane Eyre, Restless, Stoker, Only Lovers Left Alive, Tracks, The Double, Maps to the Stars, and Crimson Peak. In addition to acting, Wasikowska has ventured into directing, making her debut on a segment of The Turning, based on short stories by Australian author Tim Winton. Born in Canberra, Australia, Wasikowska is of Polish-Australian heritage -- her mother is a Polish photographer and her father an Australian photographer and collagist. She has an older sister, Jess, and a younger brother, Kai. In her early years, she studied ballet intensively, contemplating a professional career until the age of 14. This training later aids her in handling her nerves during auditions.
