What's After the Movie
Matthew Tyler Costello (born August 5, 1993 in Linwood, Michigan) is an American‑born naturalized Ivorian professional basketball player who currently stars for Valencia in the Spanish Liga ACB and EuroLeague. Growing up as the son of Mike and Jen Costello, he quickly distinguished himself at Bay City Western High School, where he averaged 25.1 points, 19.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0 blocks per game, set school records in points (1,518), rebounds (1,069) and blocked shots (280), and earned honors such as the 2012 Michigan Mr. Basketball, Gatorade Player of the Year and Parade All‑American. His dominance attracted national attention, landing him among the top‑100 recruits nationwide and securing a scholarship to Michigan State, where he played from 2012 to 2016 and finished third on the Spartans’ all‑time blocked‑shots list while contributing to the team’s run to the 2015 Final Four. After going undrafted in 2016, Costello entered the NBA Summer League with the Atlanta Hawks, signed briefly with both the Hawks and the Memphis Grizzlies, and began his professional career with the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League. A two‑way contract with the San Antonio Spurs in 2017 gave him his NBA debut, and a subsequent stint with the Austin Spurs helped him capture the 2018 G League championship. He then moved to Europe, playing for Sidigas Avellino in Italy, Gran Canaria in Spain (where he posted double‑digit scoring averages and earned a EuroCup blocks‑leader title in 2021), and Baskonia, where he made his EuroLeague debut. In July 2024 he signed with Valencia, continuing his impact as a versatile center/power forward. His blend of size, shot‑blocking instincts, and work ethic has made him a valued contributor on both sides of the Atlantic. Internationally, Costello obtained Ivorian citizenship and represented Ivory Coast at AfroBasket 2021. Off the court, he majored in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on human capital and society, and remains a dedicated family son with no publicly reported children.
