Masachika Ichimura

Masachika Ichimura is a celebrated Japanese actor and voice talent whose career has spanned more than five decades, making him one of the most versatile performers in Japan's modern entertainment landscape. Born on January 28, 1949 in Kawagoe, Saitama, he pursued formal training at the Theater Art College in Tokyo before making his professional debut in 1973 as King Herod in the Japanese production of Jesus Christ Superstar. His striking stage presence quickly earned him a place in the prestigious Shiki Theatre Company, where he originated iconic roles in productions such as West Side Story (Bernardo), Cats (Rum Tum Tugger), The Phantom of the Opera (Erik), and Miss Saigon (the Engineer), showcasing his talent as both singer and actor. After leaving Shiki in 1990, Ichimura signed with the talent agency Horipro and continued to dominate both theatrical and screen arenas. He is perhaps internationally recognized for lending his voice to the legendary Pokémon antagonist Mewtwo in the 1998 film Pokémon: The First Movie and later reprising the role in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, as well as portraying Jack Skellington in the Japanese dub of The Nightmare Before Christmas and the Kingdom Hearts video‑game series. Ichimura’s filmography includes notable appearances as Toyotomi Hideyoshi in The Floating Castle (2012), Kitō Hanbei in Thirteen Assassins (2010), and Honda Kakuan in Baragaki: Unbroken Samurai (2021). On television he has portrayed historical figures such as Tokugawa Ieyasu in the drama Ieyasu, Edo wo Tateru (2019) and performed in contemporary series like Doctor‑X (2019). Despite being diagnosed with early‑stage stomach cancer in 2014, he successfully completed treatment and returned to the stage, later receiving the Medal with Purple Ribbon (2007) and the Order of the Rising Sun, 4th Class (2019) for his contributions to Japanese arts and culture.
