Renowned as a Portuguese film director and screenwriter, he was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1908. He began his filmmaking career in 1927, initially capturing the essence of World War I. His first completed film, a documentary in 1931, followed a similar vein, portraying his city of Porto. His recognition in the global film community escalated after he directed his second feature narrative film, a social satire named Past and Present, in 1971. His contributions to cinema continued unabated up until his last years, earning him the tag of the world's oldest active film director in late 1980s.
Oliveira was bestowed with several awards during his lifetime, notably the Career Golden Lion from the 61st Venice International Film Festival, the Special Lion for the Overall Work in the 42nd Venice International Film Festival, an Honorary Golden Palm for his lifetime achievements in 2008 Cannes Film Festival, and the French Legion of Honor. Oliveira passed away in 2015, leaving behind a significantly diverse and influential body of work that is sure to inspire filmmakers for generations to come.
