Madeleine Carroll

Madeleine Carroll (born Marie‑Madeleine Bernadette O'Carroll on 26 February 1906 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England) was a British‑American film star whose career spanned the silent era to the early 1950s, making her one of the most recognizable actresses of the interwar period. After graduating with a B.A. in languages from the University of Birmingham she taught French for a year before quitting to pursue acting, winning a beauty contest that launched her into Seymour Hicks' touring company and her stage debut in 1927. Her screen debut came a year later in The Guns of Loos and she quickly rose to prominence with leading roles in What Money Can Buy (1928) and The First Born (1928). In 1935 she captivated audiences as the icy, intelligent blonde heroine in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic The 39 Steps, a performance praised by the New York Times as “charming and skillful” and later cited by Roger Ebert as the archetype of Hitchcock’s women. The film’s success earned her a lucrative contract with Paramount, and she appeared opposite stars such as George Brent, Henry Fonda, and Cary Grant in films like The Case Against Mrs. Ames (1936), Blockade (1938), and North West Mounted Police (1940). At the height of her fame she was the world’s highest‑paid actress in 1938, but the death of her sister in the London Blitz prompted a dramatic shift: she abandoned most of her acting work to serve as a Red Cross nurse, attaining the rank of captain and receiving both the French Légion d’Honneur and the American Medal of Freedom for her wartime humanitarian efforts. After the war she returned briefly to the screen, made her Broadway debut in Goodbye, My Fancy (1948), and ultimately retired, spending her later years between Paris and Spain, where she died of pancreatic cancer on 2 October 1987 at the age of 81.
