Lucille Lund

Lucille Lund was an American actress whose career flourished during the 1930s Golden Age of Hollywood, leaving an indelible mark on the horror genre and Western films alike. Born on June 3, 1913, in Buckley, Washington, to Norwegian immigrant parents Olaf Sylfestson Lund and Laura Skjelkvåle Lund, she developed an early passion for performance, beginning her theatrical journey as a child with play extracts and readings. After joining the Henry Duffy Players, a respected stock company, she toured extensively up and down the Pacific Coast, honing her craft before formally studying drama at Northwestern University in Chicago, where she would later achieve national recognition.

Lund's breakthrough came in 1933 when she won the nationwide contest "The Most Beautiful College Coed," securing a contract with Universal Pictures and launching her cinematic career. She made her debut in Horseplay (1933) before gaining notice opposite Robert Young in Saturday's Millions. 1934 proved to be her most prolific year, starring in six films including her most iconic role as Karen in Edgar G. Ulmer's classic horror film The Black Cat, where she acted alongside Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. That same year, she demonstrated her versatility in Westerns with the lead role in Range Warfare opposite Reb Russell, earning her recognition as one of the final WAMPAS Baby Stars, an honor bestowed upon promising young actresses. From 1935 through 1939, Lund appeared in twenty-one films, though many were B-movies like Prison Shadows, and her final screen appearances were largely uncredited. In 1937, she married radio producer-writer Kenneth Higgins, and after the birth of their two daughters, she retired from acting in 1939 to focus on family. Following Higgins' death in 1973, she briefly returned to perform in commercials before making final on-screen appearances in documentaries celebrating Hollywood's early era, including Lugosi: Hollywood's Dracula (1997) and I Used to be in Pictures (2000). She passed away peacefully at her home in Rolling Hills, California, on February 15, 2002, at the age of 88.
