Leigh Whipper

Leigh Whipper, born Leigh Rollin Whipper on October 29, 1876 in Charleston, South Carolina, emerged as a pioneering figure in American theatre and early cinema, breaking racial barriers at a time when opportunities for Black performers were severely limited. The son of noted African‑American educator, author and activist Frances Rollin Whipper and the nephew of abolitionist William Whipper, Leigh grew up in a family deeply committed to civil rights and intellectual achievement, an environment that shaped his determination to succeed on stage. After a brief stint at Howard University Law School, which he left in 1895 without completing his degree, Whipper turned to the dramatic arts, making his debut in 1899 with a Philadelphia stock production of Uncle Tom's Cabin despite having no formal training. His early Broadway appearance came in the production Georgia Minstrels, and he quickly established himself as a versatile performer capable of handling both dramatic and comic roles. Whipper's film career began with the silent picture The Symbol of the Unconquered in 1920, and he went on to create the iconic role of Crooks in the original Broadway staging of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, a part he later reprised in the 1939 film adaptation, showcasing his powerful presence and nuanced portrayals. In addition to his acting achievements, Whipper made historic contributions to the industry by becoming the first African American to join the Actors' Equity Association and co‑founding the Negro Actors Guild of America, organizations that advocated for fair treatment and professional opportunities for Black artists. During World War II he served on the steering committee of the Negro Division of the Hollywood Victory Committee, demonstrating his commitment to both his craft and his community. His legacy is further commemorated in a portrait titled "Dans un Café à Paris (Leigh Whipper)" by Loïs Mailou Jones, now on display at the Brooklyn Museum, reflecting the cultural esteem he earned throughout a near‑century‑long life that spanned stage, screen, and social activism.
