Katy M. O'Brian

Katy M. O'Brian (born February 12, 1989) is an American actress and martial artist whose career spans over a decade of diverse roles across television, film, and the superhero genre. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, she grew up in a mixed‑race family and began training in martial arts at the age of five, earning a brown belt in Shorei Goju Ryu Karate by nine and later a black belt in hapkido while attending Indiana University Bloomington, where she majored in psychology and Germanic studies and was a founding member of the short‑form improv troupe Hoosonfirst. In addition to her martial arts expertise, O'Brian served seven years as a police officer with the Carmel Police Department, working on the Crisis Intervention Team and obtaining law‑enforcement certification through the university’s Cadet Officer Program. After graduating, she pursued bodybuilding, competing in figure competitions in 2014 and 2015, and earned a personal trainer certification before relocating to Los Angeles in 2016 to chase a screen‑acting career. While waiting for her break, she taught self‑defense and Hapkido through UCLA’s Martial Arts Program, also studying Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu‑jitsu. O'Brian’s first television appearance came as a Savior named Katy on AMC’s The Walking Dead, followed by guest spots on Halt and Catch Fire, Tosh.0, and How to Get Away with Murder. Her breakout role arrived in 2018 as George on Syfy’s zombie series Z Nation, and she subsequently portrayed Major Sara Grey in The CW’s Black Lightning, Kimball in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Imperial communications officer Elia Kane in Seasons 2 and 3 of Disney+’s The Mandalorian. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe she played Jentorra, the leader of the Freedom Fighters, in Ant‑Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). 2022 marked her first major film lead as Jackie in A24’s Love Lies Bleeding, and in 2024 she joined the cast of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning as a U.S. Navy diver, cementing her status as a versatile performer who bridges action‑intensive stunt work with compelling dramatic portrayals.
