What's After the Movie

Kanji Tsuda

Kanji Tsuda, born on 27 August 1965 in Fukui, Fukui, Japan, is a prolific Japanese actor whose career spans over three decades, marked by a remarkable versatility that ranges from gritty horror to tender drama. He first entered the film industry in 1993 with a role in Sonatine, quickly establishing himself as a reliable character actor and earning steady work throughout the 1990s with appearances in celebrated titles such as Kids Return (1996) and the critically acclaimed Hana‑bi (1997). Tsuda’s breakthrough came with his memorable performance as the bartender in Takashi Miike’s Audition (1999), a role that showcased his ability to blend subtle menace with nuanced humanity. Throughout the early 2000s, he became a familiar face in both cinema and television, portraying Daisuke Okubo in the popular tokusatsu series Kamen Rider Ryuki and its film special, while also delivering a chilling turn as Katsuya Tokunaga in the internationally known horror franchise Ju‑on: The Grudge (2002). His dedication was recognized in 2002 when he received the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Copycat Killer.

Beyond genre work, Tsuda has demonstrated impressive range with roles in mainstream and art-house projects alike, appearing in Tokyo Sonata (2008) as Kurosu, the deeply human drama Shin Godzilla (2016) as Fumiya Mori, and the historical epic Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle (2021) as a middle‑aged Hiroo Onoda. He continues to lend his voice to animated works, notably voicing Gurge in the Japanese dub of Finding Nemo (2003) and its sequel Finding Dory (2016). With a filmography that includes over fifty titles across film, television, and voice‑over work, Kanji Tsuda remains a steadfast figure in Japanese entertainment, celebrated for his consistent performances, professional reliability, and the subtle depth he brings to every role.
