Johnny Vegas

Michael Joseph Pennington, known professionally as Johnny Vegas, is an English actor, comedian, director and writer born on 5 September 1970 in the Thatto Heath area of St Helens, then part of Lancashire. Raised in a large Roman Catholic family with an older sister and two brothers, he spent a brief stint at St Joseph's College, a boarding seminary, before returning home due to homesickness. He later earned a BA in Art and Ceramics from Middlesex University and worked a series of odd jobs – from an Argos warehouse to selling boiler insurance door‑to‑door – before finding his vocation in comedy as a member of the cult performance group Cluub Zarathustra. His television breakthrough came in 1996 with a debut on Win, Lose or Draw, and he soon became a familiar face on shows such as The Big Breakfast, Shooting Stars and The Weakest Link. Vegas cemented his reputation with the dark‑comedy series Ideal (2005‑2011) as Moz, and later as Geoff Maltby “The Oracle” in the popular ITV sitcom Benidorm (2007‑2009, 2015‑2017). He has also portrayed Wet Eric Agnew in the revived Still Open All Hours (2013‑2019) and lends his distinctive husky voice to animated programmes like The Rubbish World of Dave Spud.

Beyond television, Vegas has contributed to radio, film and stage. He co‑wrote and starred in the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Night Class, voiced characters in Early Man and The Harry Hill Movie, and appeared in the Aardman feature Early Man (2018). His artistic side reemerges in his acclaimed ceramic work, which is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and he has directed music videos and an upcoming audio series of The Wombles. A staunch supporter of his hometown, he remains active in community projects, holds an honorary doctorate from Edge Hill University, and continues to appear as a regular panelist on QI and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
